The origins of "Young & Dangerous" - chinese new year - February 2007

Young "Chan Ho Nam"! Maybe, but the tough guy "fights" dirty... "Chin up"!!

The story:

(02/21/2007) (Apple Daily) At the night market in Victoria Park on early Chinese New Year morning, a group of seven individuals had a dispute with the couple who operated a stall over prices. Suddenly, one man threw a left hook punch at the male store owner. Then another man punched the store owner on the head, while a third man hit him hard with punches on the back of the head. Afterwards, the men cursed the store owner out and left the scene.

NB: when the crowds disperse at the very end, a voice over the microphone can be heard saying, "step right up, step right up! Come and buy again!"

HK journalism Vs the world

Journalism in HK has always come under fire for being overly dramatic and excessively outrageous in their reporting of current affairs. More often than not, its true because theres nothing more resourceful than have paparazzi baying for nude breast photos of "Twins" Gillian\ or twin; or be it the case of the pair of scissors thrown out the window and lodging itself in the head of an elderly lady, who managed to check herself into the casualty ward with the scissors still embedded.

God bless Apple Daily for all its righteous reporting.

Contrast the pics provided by Yahoo news and Apple Daily (a local HK newspaper) respectively which depict the recent shooting murder mystery of 7 chinese ethnics in Sittensen, Germany over the weekend.

Now, honestly, how many times did you look at the drawing? And they say sex sells.....

Triad activity

Just as you start to think that Triads are a whole stack of street myth bullshit - heres the evidence to prove otherwise - Check out the name of the person signing the document! WTF....?
The Threatening Letter (02/07/2007) (Ming Pao) This is a rare opportunity to see a threatening letter in its totality. The above was sent to the Ming Pao newspaper in Hong Kong:

(in translation)

Selena Chow (of the Liberal Party)

The "Sun Yee On" triad gang informs you right now that you must immediately expel Lam Chui-lian and Tsang Pui-kei from the Lberal Party. You must immediately rescind the Liberal Party's subsidies to district councilors. If you disobey, Sun Yee On will chop Selena Chow to death with knives and bomb the headquarters of the Liberal Party. Signed "Sister-In-Law Number Seven." [a utility knife was attached with the letter]

Note: Lam Chui-lian is an elected district councilor and Tsang Pui-kei is the instructor at social dance classes sponsored by district councilors.

Wanchai food market 4.2.2007

Coerced again into running Bowen Rd with Win (again) and delaying lunch until 3:30pm, I convinced her to come to causeway bay to go eat and search for my long awaited free copy of JUICE magazine (i really should just order it online - lazy me). We headed out arguing whether to have japanese or vietnamese, and eventually decided on vietnamese and afterwards getting some sashimi from an awesome sushi/ sashimi joint behind Times Square.

Win frowned at the prospect at going shoulder to shoulder with the mass of Hong Kong nutters out on a sunday in CWB, but i more than reiterated my (un)willingness to go on a weekly torture run and forgoing lunch with such pathetic show of unmanliness that i think she acquiesced out of disgust.

Since the newbie had never ventured into the wilderness of what is wanchai, we took a quick tour of the markets and was glad to come out pleasantly surprised at the freshness of quirkiness of street vendoring, which is wierdly refreshing everytime.

The newbie found a jacket at her new favourite store - Izzue; whilst I gawked at the store chicks then back home for some sashimi on rice - hooray! I mean "Shit! Weekend over already!"

Blunt humour - i love the internet. Found this whilst reading some blog somewhere. Thank heavens we live in a democracy with freedom of speech. Places in the world with morality police? Morality can go screw itself.....

Industrial area - Sham Shui Po, Kowloon 3.2.2007

Hugh mentioned that some of the areas of Sham Shui Po were being done over as part of the Hong Kong government's urban renewal scheme so we decided to get a last glimpse of urban architechture left reminiscent of the 60's in the industrial areas around SSP and Nam Cheung.

Alot of the warehouses were either abandoned or were in the process of being shut down, so were only able to check it out from outside. Couldnt stop thinking about the potential for parties being held there! AWESOME... !

Finished up the day scoping out some wicked views overlooking Sham Sui Po from the mountain just behind the edge of town - then catching zz's all the way home.

Tung O @ Lamma Island 3.2.2007

Not satisfied with being unable to complete the Shek Pai Wan -> Sok Kwu Wan hike last week, Win garnered enough interest to check out the rest of the island. Sort of also a farewell for Adrian (off to London the lucky bugger!) who wanted to see of much of Hong Kong in a month than in the year he's been here! haha... Shannon couldnt make it, but said his friend Susan would be coming but as we had never met, there was a bit of random guessing as to which pretty girl would be her. We weren't disappointed. :)
Sampans are plentiful at Aberdeen, and old folks were literally fighting (as much as their able bodies would let them) to vie for our patronage.

The sampan took us directly to the start of the Tung O trail and we decided to start it and hit back for some awesome seafood lunch @ Rainbow - awesome choice, thanks guys! :)

Treeson @ Neighbour Square

Found out a new joint get all those funky toys that I could never afford when I was 10. The new Treeson range had landed stock at Neighbour Square in Mongkok. Little devils wreck havoc on your desk like no tomorrow and look wicked to boot - shove it Monkey Boy! (and get me some coffee!)
